KAILUA-KONA — One of Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) Division II’s top girls volleyball teams handled business on Wednesday night in Kona town.
Hawaii Preparatory Academy swept the hosts in Ehunui at Old Kona Airport, primarily led by Ka Makani’s elite team chemistry and strong play at the net from senior Margot Lewis and sophomore Chloe Willman. Sophomore Leia Benioff served the ball well, securing a number of aces late in the match. All in all, HPA’s size and talent was too much for the ‘Io to overcome.
HPA won by scores of 25-4, 25-11 and 25-5 in the quick rout. The team moved to 8-1 on the season and second in BIIF DII — just a half-game behind local rival Parker (as of late Thursday afternoon).
Ka Makani also played DI opponent Kealakehe on Thursday night. See this weekend’s paper to read the results. HPA will also be back Tuesday night against Waimea opponent Kanu o ka ‘Aina inside Castle Gymnasium.
Ehunui moved to 2-8 in 2024 and now sit near the bottom of the BIIF’s DII standings. The ‘Io will seek redemption against the Dragons at 5 p.m. tonight in Honoka‘a town.
KSH 3, Waiakea 0
Two of the top teams in BIIF DI squared off Wednesday night in Kea‘au, as Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i handled business against the Warriors again in a straight-sets sweep. The hosts won by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14.
KSH’s Maile Kuamo‘o had another strong showing of getting her teammates involved, dishing out 31 assists. Kuamo‘o found teammate Shay Beals repeatedly, as she posted a match-high 15 kills. Defensively, Mia Polloi led with six blocks while teammate Kealohi Dudoit tallied 15 digs. Polloi additionally notched three service aces.
KS-Hawai‘i continues to go on a roll with its 11-0 start to 2024, leading BIIF DI. It will resume action against Kea‘au at 5 p.m. tonight on the road. Junior varsity will get things going first.
Waiakea’s (8-2) only losses have come from KSH this season. The third-placed Warriors will also resume action tonight, hosting Hilo at 5 p.m. — beginning with junior varsity.
Parker 3, Kanu 0
BIIF DII-leading Parker girls volleyball continued its dominant season Wednesday against Kanu o ka ‘Aina in Waimea District Park Gymnasium.
The Bulls beat their competition in consecutive sets, winning 25-10, 25-20 and 25-9. With the win, Parker reached its ninth victory — the third team in the overall BIIF to do so.
The Bulls (9-1) have now won two in a row, hoping to keep it going against Makua Lani on Wednesday at home.
Kanu (2-8) fell to Parker for the second time this season. Hawaii Prep will be its next opponent on Tuesday night in Castle Gymnasium.
